Progressive Metal 의 어원을 뒤집고 재창조한 Dream Theater의 Images And Words 앨범으로 절정의 하이테크닉과 드라마틱하고 거대한 스케일의 곡진행력, 뛰어난 멜로디 등의 출중한 완성도를 지니고 있다. 드라마틱한 보이스의 소유자 James Labrie의 가입으로 당대 최고의 라인업을 자랑하게 되었고 맴버 개개인의 애드립에서도 비교대상이 될 밴드를 찾아보기 힘들 정도로, 기타의 John Petrucci, 드럼의 Mike Portnoy, 베이스의 John Myung, 키보드의 Kevin Moore은 각 섹션을 대표하는 최고의 인스트루멘틀러로 자리잡는다.
