데뷔앨범 Kill 'Em All에서 순수하고 혈기왕성한 Thrash 사운드를 들려주어 많은 주목을 받았던 Metallica가 본격적으로 세계적인 명성을 얻기 시작한 것은 본작 Ride The Lightning이 발표된 시점부터이다. 당시 Heavy Metal씬에서는 상상도 할 수 없었던 치밀한 악곡구성을 시도했으며 카리스마적인 연주로 Thrash Metal 붐을 일으켰다. 개인적으로 가장 소중한 Metallica의 작품이기도 한데 고교시절 등하교길에서 매일같이 신물나게 들었던 기억이 난다. 장중한 스래쉬 교향곡으로 Metallica의 매력을 한껏 발산하는 For Whom The Bell Tolls, 일취월장한 Metallica의 작곡력을 짐작케하는 곡들로 거대한 악곡과 치밀한 사운드 전개로 깊은 감동을 주는 Fade To Black와 The Call Of Ktulu등 많은 명곡들을 담고 있으며 라이브시 단골 레파토리이기도한 Creeping Death를 음악감상실에서 처음 들었을 때의 아찔함은 아직도 생생하다.
