드라마. 테크니션. 하모니. 레코딩. 컨셉. 라인업. 개성. 어느 분야에서든지 '최고'라는 수식어를 달 수 있는 유일한 앨범으로, 밴드 디스코그라피의 최정점을 완성했다는 평가가 현재까지도 지속되고 있다. 시종일관 엇박과 하이햇/베이스 연환을 통한 Mike Portnoy의 미친 드러밍과 Jordan Rudess의 화려한 백킹이 전 곡을 감싸며 Dance of Eternity의 합주에서는 너무나도 유명한 John Myung의 베이스 솔로가 삽입되어 있다. 보컬리스트 James Labrie의 젊은 보이스가 멋지게 흘러가며, 특히 감성 표현이 대단한 수준이다. 노래에 대해 잘 알지 못해도 그가 전달하려는 감정을 충분히 느낄 수 있으며, 모든 곡에서 John Petrucci의 거대한 역량이 변칙적인 기타리프와 멋진 솔로로 드러난다. 20세기 프로그레시브의 종점이자 새로운 시작을 알리는 명반이며, Dream Theater가 '최고'라 불리는 이유 그 자체이다. 가장 위대한 테크니션들의 찬란한 금자탑.

Dream Theater 음악의 차원을 한단계 상승시킨 걸작으로 한편의 비극적인 영화를 보는 듣한 컨셉미학의 극치를 담고 있는 Scenes From A Memory 앨범이다. 수록곡들을 9개의 Scene으로 구분, 연결하여 긴장과 이완을 반복하는 놀라운 전개를 보여주며 리뷰를 쓰기가 괴로운 이들인 만큼 글로 표현하기가 불가능한 음악적 다양성을 부여하고 있다. 중반 John Petrucci의 기타솔로가 압권인 The Spirit Carries On, 거대한 스케일로 부풀어 오르는 Finally Free, 눈물이 날만큼 깊은 여운을 안겨주는 Through Her Eyes 등의 곡들에 Dream Theater 최고의 역량이 집결되어 있다. "멤버의 변화는 밴드에게 있어 화학적인 변화까지도 의미한다" 라는 John Myung의 말처럼 키보디스트 Jordan Rudees의 가입 후 Kevin Moore 재직시절보다도 멤버들 개개인의 역량이 보다 조화롭게 업그레이드되어 있다. 최고의 심미적 쾌감을 안겨주는 문제작으로 가장 오랫동안 들은 무덤까지 가지고 갈 앨범이다.
