1981년 덴마크의 코펜하겐에서 결성된 Mercyful Fate의 두 번째 작품으로 헤비메탈 계의 고전으로 손꼽힌다. 리더이자 보컬리스트인 King Diamond의 관심사(사탄, 신비주의)에 음악의 초점이 모아져 있으며, 클래시컬한 느낌의 기타 사운드와 킹 다이아몬드의 쭈뼛 서는 가성 보컬로 독특한 분위기를 연출한다. 박진감 넘치는 구성을 지닌 "Come to the Sabbath", 한편의 영화를 보는 듯한 "The Oath" 등이 담겨 있다. 이후 King Diamond가 자신의 이름을 딴 그룹을 결성하면서 Mercyful Fate는 자연스레 해산되며, 1992년에 재결성하여 1993년에 3집 "In the Shadows"를 발표한다.
