18세에 G.I.T 강사를 역임할 정도로 출중한 실력을 지녔던 기타리스트 Paul Gilbert는 Surgical Steel 출신의 두 멤버인 보컬의 Jeff Martin와 베이스의 John Alderete, 그리고 드러머로 Harry Gschdesser를 영입하여 Racer X를 출범시킨다. Paul Gilbert의 메틀계 데뷔작인 본작 Street Lethal은 파워풀한 연주를 바탕으로 첨단 하이 테크닉을 들을 수 있는데, 피킹의 정확성등에서 상상을 초월하는 기교를 보여주어 기타키드들 사이에서 경이의 대상이 되었다. 본작으로 말미암아 당시 신흥레이블이었던 Roadrunner의 간판밴드로 우뚝서게 된다.
