Additional notes
Delain was formed by Martijn Westerholt, the former Within Temptation keyboard player, who quit Within Temptation because of health reasons. While his brother Robert remained in Within Temptation, Martijn had to watch the band's breakthrough from the sidelines.
During his illness (he suffered from Pfeiffer's disease for four consecutive years), Westerholt kept on writing music. This project evolved into Delain. He got some respected Dutch metal musicians (like Sharon den Adel) to help him with the project, and sent demo tapes to Marko Hietala (Nightwish) and Liv Kristine (Leaves' Eyes) and got them involved as well. Eventually, he contracted the then-unknown Charlotte Wessels for vocal duties.
In 2021, all of the members except Martijn Westerholt left the band and the band was back to being a solo project as it was in the beginning. By 2022, however, a new lineup had been assembled.
