Artist Biography by John Bush
Besides the wealth of chiseled echo-techno he's recorded as Mike Ink, M:I:5, Love Inc., and Studio 1, Cologne producer Wolfgang Voigt released several albums of more expansive music for Mille Plateaux as Gas. Voigt debuted the project with the Modern EP on his own Profan label in 1995, then released Gas a year later, followed by Zauberberg (1998), Königsforst (1999), and Pop (2000); in 2008, the albums were presented as the box set Nah und Fern, released through Kompakt (another one of Voigt's labels). In contrast to his previous work's stark austerity, the Gas LPs presented tracks of murky ambience with even murkier percussion.
