preview  The Suicide Machines  -  preview  Destruction by Definition (1996) (85/100)  2014-10-14
Destruction by DefinitionThe Suicide Machines is one of those bands that the most mainstream punk rock fans doesn't give that much of credit and sometimes doesn't even know them. I would be one of these if it wasn't for this album's first track "New Girl" in the soundtrack of the PlayStation game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and yeah, it's a great song.

It took me 10 years from the first time I heard "New Girl" to get "Destruction by Definition" and now I can't think on anything but how stupid I was. This album is really good, a catchy hardcore punk influenced ska, really fast stuff. Every single track is good, but halfway through it, the album gets... boring. Unfortunaly, the songs are too similar to each other and that's make the album kinda repetitive.

It's not bad, it's pretty good, but the similarity between the songs got me distracted thinking about anything but the songs, I didn't even realized when it ended. It needs more than one listen to enjoy on it's fullness, so 85 seems good enough.

Highlights: "New Girl", "Break the Glass", "Our Time", "Islands".
preview  Streetlight Manifesto  -  preview  Somewhere in the Between (2007) (95/100)  2014-10-12
Somewhere in the BetweenI never thought that the word "experimental" could be used to describe a ska punk album, but I was wrong. "Somewhere in the Between" by Jersey boys from Streetlight Manifesto is an experimental ska punk album.

It's just different from what you expect from a regular album on this particular genre. Of course, the songs are happy, fast paced, filled with punk drumming and the characteristic horns, but it flerts with other kinds of music, like traditional spanish music in tracks like "Forty Days" and gypsy music influenced sounds in "We Will Fall Together".

The only two problems I struggled in this great album was the duration of the songs and the outros. "One Foot On the Gas, One Foot In the Grave" lasts for almost five and a half minutes and that's just HUGE for punk rock. Don't get me wrong, I like long songs, but not when most of the time is filled with horn solos, not that this is bad, but it is still strange to me when it comes to a ska punk album. This also comes to the problem with the outros, the intrumental parts in the end of most of the songs. It is, again huge. Some of them lasts for more than a minute and that kinda ruins the whole song for me.

Besides those two things, it is a great album, and if it wasn't for these problems, I would probably give it a 100 rating, but, I can't, so 95.
preview  Bullet Bane  -  preview  New World Broadcast (2011) (95/100)  2014-09-11
New World BroadcastAs a brazilian, I always thought that the brazilian melodic hardcore scene needed a more technical band. We always had bands influenced by the classics like NOFX and Lagwagon, but I had never listened to a band influenced by the more technical acts, like the canadians from Belvedere and This is a Standoff or the japanese giants from Sunsgrind. Then, I listened to the "We Took Off" EP released by this band named Take Off the Halter.

It was mindblowin', very fast, technical and fresh and I was hoping for a full-lenght. 2 years later, New World Broadcast was released under the new name Bullet Bane and yes, this is more than I was expecting.

With blasting sounding, full blast drums with such technical turns, complex metal influenced riffs and guitar solos, heavy bass lines, great vocals and amazing lyrics, this album opened up more the boundries of brazilian melodic hardcore, opening the doors for a whole new generation of more technical and experimental bands like Running Like Lions and Against the Hero.

It is, 100% for sure, one of the best melodic hardcore albums of this decade.
preview  NOFX  -  preview  So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes (1997) (90/100)  2014-07-11
So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes"So Long..." starts off with full blasting punk rock songs, all of them shorter than the tunes on "Punk in Drublic" and "Heavy Petting Zoo". They are not as fast and melodic, but there's something in the lyrics and in the sound that reminds me of punk classics like The Ramones and The Stooges, but it's more polished than that.

The drums have some new sounds rather than the characteristic beat used in 90% of every Nofx song. "Champs Elysées" is a good example of that. The guitars, as always, are great and we can listen to lots of great riffs, although they are not that complex than the riffs in the next albums like "The War on Errorism", but it's a great start.

As a bass enthusiast, I noticied that Fat Mike really put some effort to this. It's the first Nofx album that the bass lines are pretty great and they are more independent from the drum beat.

Another great feature of the album is the ska influence being more active than in the past two albums, presenting great ska-like tracks like "All Outta Angst" and "Eat the Meek".

It's a great Nofx album, not as great as Punk in Drublic, but still a great album filled with amazing tracks.
preview  Sugar Kane  -  preview  Ignorância Pluralística (2014) (95/100)  2014-06-13
Ignorância PluralísticaSugar Kane is finally back and this album sounds so... mature, in matter of lyrics AND sounding. It's raw, visceral, agressive, fast and also pretty simple.

Every song pushes you to the wall with amazing drumming, agressive guitar riffs and Capilé's voice is harsher then ever. With all of this put together, we have a more punk rock influenced album, stepping away a little from the melodic hardcore sound of the first albums. This is also the first album recorded by Moderno, the new bassist (also Cueio Limão's bassist), which made the bass lines faster, but less technical... sounds more punk then the sound of Flavio's (previous bassist) bass lines in "A Máquina Que Sonha Colorido".

If you are not sure on how agressive and well played this album is, don't listen to me, listen to the song "Fui Eu"! That guitar intro gives me chills every single time I hear it. This same song has a incredible DRUM solo too. "Vital" is also a highlight, the first and the fastest of all the eleven tracks in the album. "Surtei" is not that fast, more british 70's punk influenced, mixed with some 80's hard rock.

"Ignorância Pluralística" is finally here and it is for sure a future classic of brazilian punk rock.

Something for Nothing preview  Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!  -  preview  Something for Nothing (2010) (70/100)  2014-10-30
It shows potentional, the instruments are good, the vocals don't sound natural, the same for some strange synth parts, but it lays the foundation for
Rigor Mortis preview  Rigor Mortis  -  preview  Rigor Mortis (1988) (80/100)  2014-09-18
The instruments sound really good, but the vocals are not that good, but it's still a good thrash/proto-death album.
Document #8 preview  Pg. 99  -  preview  Document #8 (2001) (90/100)  2014-05-31
This album is really important for extreme music, it influenced a new generation of post-hardcore bands to embrace a hevier sound.
no image preview  Cannibal Corpse  -  preview  Eaten Back To Life (1990) (65/100)  2014-05-31
Still a prototype of the Cannibal Corpse sound... pretty fast, but the songs sound all the same with rare exceptions.

Disconnect Me preview  The Agonist  -  preview  Disconnect Me (2014) [Single] (95/100)  2014-05-28
The Agonist's first release without Alissa White-Gluz, but new singer Vicky Psarakis delivers it with even better growls and singing.
A Morte é o Começo preview  Devendra  -  preview  A Morte é o Começo (2010) [EP] (85/100)  2014-05-27
Devendra is the band that performs a quality sound, different from 90% of other brazilian post-hardcore bands. Awesome release.
Loving Our Small Days preview  Shank  -  preview  Loving Our Small Days (2010) (85/100)  2014-05-27
My second favorite Shank album. With this, the band started to build the sound that would culminate into Baitfish Attitude.
聖邪のドラゴン preview  Dragon Guardian  -  preview  聖邪のドラゴン (2007) (80/100)  2014-05-27
Similar to a lot of things, but the idea of telling a story different of slaying dragons is pretty new. Good album.
