Iced Earth의 이미지를 대변해온 명보컬리스트 Matthew Barlow가 2003년 초반 Iced Earth를 떠나면서 이들은 큰 위기를 맞았다. 신작의 레코딩이 진행되는 상황에서도 새로운 보컬에 대한 이야기는 극비에 가까웠는데, Judas Priest 출신의 Tim "Ripper" Owens로 밝혀지면서 본작 The Glorious Burden에 대한 우려와 기대는 더욱 증폭되었다. Ripper의 목소리는 스래쉬에 더욱 어울리는 성질의 것이었고 뛰어난 실력을 지녔음에도 불구하고 Rob Halford의 거대한 그늘에 가려 제대로 된 평가를 받지 못한 것이 사실이다. Iced Earth의 일곱 번째 정규작인 본작은 Iced Earth 역사상 가장 거대한 스케일의 컨셉을 취하고 있는데, 구성력이 강조된 반면에 본연의 육중함은 줄어든 모습이다. 그간의 수난을 떨쳐내듯 포효하는 Ripper의 보컬은 일품이다. 남북전쟁을 컨셉으로 취하는 3부작 Gettysburg(1863)가 본작의 하이라이트다.
